A longtime outspoken advocate for planning, building and cultivating well-planned healthy communities, Charlie Smith draws heavily on his background as a Masters level city and regional planner and his unusually broad knowledge of urban design and historic building techniques to give his clients an extra edge in the historic properties market. While he was raised in Charleston and the Carolina lowcountry, Charlie also served as Development Coordinator for the City of Miami Beach, Florida during the redevelopment of the Art Deco District in South Beach in the 1980's. Returning to Charleston in 1996, Charlie has been actively engaged in many aspects of the Charleston community. Much of his community work since 1996 has been in social justice advocacy.

He was a founder of the Alliance for Full Acceptance, now one of the south's largest LGBTQ advocacy organizations. Charlie served as a Charleston County Planning Commissioner for eight years and now serves as an appointee of Mayor Tecklenburg to the West Ashley Revitalization Commission.
